House of Tree
Sustainable Retreat in Asturias, Spain
About
The House of Tree is the first initiative by Green Principals s.l., a spanish company dedicated to driving sustainability through business. The House of Tree is a building in Asturias, built in the 1860s that is being developed into a retreat with nine studio apartments. The comprehensive remodelling is done using circular economy principles and through sustainable design will result in an energy-neutral property. We believe that due to sustainable building in addition to the spectacular natural surroundings, culture and gastronomy, the House of Tree will become a premiere example of an authentic sustainability-themed retreat. We’re working hard on the project and anticipate opening in July 2025. See the below updates section for the current situation. Follow us to get regular updates by email. Circular Economy
For the House of Tree we are keen to apply Circular Economy principles. Our beautiful 150+ year old building has many materials that are worth saving and re-purposing.Whether it's the big stones used for the walls, the old wooden beams supporting the floors, heavy doors and window frames, there is value in retaining these materials. Often these materials are of great, durable quality. Aesthetically it looks better. And it it makes economic sense, as purchasing these materials new is more costly.
At the same time it is challenging explaining this to the workers which are used to throwing away old materials and buying new, inferior materials in their construction projects. As you can see in the pictures, we are taking care to keep the window framings and covers, the roof tiles, doors and more to be able to re-use them in our building.

Getting Started
The building of House of Tree is an old building that hasn’t been in use for decades, like so many other old buildings in Spain. It used to be a house occupied by a farm family, with living quarters and a livestock barn under the same roof.As you can see in these pictures the interior of the building was in a pretty bad shape. There have been water leaks that lead to rotten floors. The ceilings, the plaster of the walls, divider walls all had to be removed. Over the course of the second half of 2023 and first half of 2024 we had to gut the entire interior. It was a lot of work.
